Key takeaways

  • Facts here are as of 12 October 2026, when the disputed roles, deals and statements were re-checked against primary sources. The directory covers about 100 people in six groups. Where a role rests only on Wikipedia or an aggregator, the entry says so. The research verified no social-media handles, so the page links to official pages and newsletters instead.
  • 2026 rewired the org charts. Several leaders changed jobs this year:
    • Demis Hassabis handed day-to-day control of Google DeepMind to Koray Kavukcuoglu.
    • Fidji Simo left her No. 2 job at OpenAI, and Greg Brockman officially took over product strategy.
    • xAI was founded by Musk and 11 others. About half the co-founders had left by February 2026, and by late March Musk was the only one remaining (Wikipedia citing Reuters; the late-March point is Wikipedia-only).
    • David Sacks ended his time as White House AI czar.
    • Abhishek Singh moved from the IndiaAI Mission to the National Testing Agency.
    • Fei-Fei Li will join AMD when its purchase of World Labs closes.
  • Lab chiefs now argue about pace as well as progress. Dario Amodei wrote: "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models." OpenAI held back GPT-6.1 Astra on safety grounds (BBC, 29 September). Access itself became a policy risk when a US export-control directive forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers from 12 June until 1 July.
  • Enterprise platform CEOs set the terms for buying agents: governance first, headcount second. ServiceNow's Bill McDermott: "Governance isn't a feature. It's the whole ball game." Under Marc Benioff, Salesforce's Agentforce product passed $1.5 billion in annual recurring revenue (ARR), on a definition widened in August.
  • Coding-agent founders are the breakout automation entrepreneurs, and bigger companies are buying them. SpaceX completed its purchase of Michael Truell's Cursor, at an implied equity value of $60 billion (SpaceX filings). Cognition raised money at a $48 billion valuation. Replit's Amjad Masad says staying independent is "kind of hard".
  • India's anchor voice is Ashwini Vaishnaw. He says India will become the largest supplier of services at the AI application layer. Sarvam AI's Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan build India's sovereign models, and Irina Ghose runs Anthropic's Bengaluru office. UIDAI CEO Saurabh Vijay was given additional charge of the IndiaAI Mission after Abhishek Singh's move to the NTA (Elets eGov, June 2026; secondary).
  • For businesses with US or European operations or customers, a few policy makers matter most:
    • Michael Kratsios and David Sacks co-chair PCAST, the White House technology advisory council. Sacks says it will push a national AI framework to replace state rules.
    • Henna Virkkunen fronted the EU's delay of high-risk AI rules to December 2027.
    • Kanishka Narayan, named the UK's AI minister in July 2026 (gov.uk appointments page), now attends Cabinet.
    • Josephine Teo launched Singapore's governance framework for agentic AI.

How to read this directory

This page is one document in a research set on AI-based automation. All facts are as of 12 October 2026. They come from research compiled on 11 October 2026 from company pages, government pages, news reports and Wikipedia, and disputed roles, deals and statements were re-checked against primary sources (filings, official pages) on 12 October 2026. The most consequential role statements were re-read on the live pages; where a page differed from earlier research, the entry follows the live page.

Besides the name, each row in the group tables gives the person's current role with the date of the source, why they matter for automation, a notable statement or move from 2025-2026, and a confidence rating.

Rating Meaning
High Confirmed on an official company or government page, or in a reputable outlet the researchers read directly
Medium One reputable report, or Wikipedia backed by a dated news report; also used when a row mixes stronger and weaker facts
Low Wikipedia, an aggregator, a search summary or a headline only. Re-check before quoting

Words in quotation marks are exact quotes from a source the researchers read. Anything else is a paraphrase. Where a quote came through Wikipedia, the entry says so.

Frontier-lab and big-tech leaders: Anthropic held steady, everyone else reshuffled

Anthropic's leadership page, read on 11 October 2026, matches the IPO prospectus that Reuters summarised on 29 September on every role both list. That makes Anthropic the best-documented lab here. OpenAI and Google both changed the management layer directly below the CEO, and xAI became a unit of SpaceX after every co-founder except Musk had left.

Policy makers: fewer czars, more frameworks

The US federal AI team turned over twice in 2026 and moved into an advisory council. Europe delayed its rules rather than dropping them. Andy Burnham has been UK Prime Minister since 20 July 2026, succeeding Keir Starmer (gov.uk), and the UK's AI minister now attends Cabinet. Singapore produced the most practical text on agents. See Governance, Americas and Europe, Asia-Pacific and Middle East and Africa.

Short profiles: who matters most and why

Dario Amodei, Anthropic

Anthropic raised $30 billion at a $380 billion post-money valuation in February 2026. It reported a $14 billion revenue run-rate, of which more than $2.5 billion came from Claude Code (Anthropic Series G). In May it raised $65 billion at a $965 billion post-money valuation and said run-rate revenue had "crossed $47 billion" (Anthropic Series H, read 11 Oct 2026). Amodei's January essay lists "economic disruption", including "mass unemployment or radically concentrating wealth", among the risks to manage (The Adolescence of Technology). In September he called for slower capability gains, checked by independent evaluators such as METR inside the labs, while insisting that "pacing does not mean halting model training" (We Must Pace the Frontier). That stance reaches the product: Anthropic's top models sit behind verification programmes for cyber and life-sciences users, and Fable 5.1 requires 30-day data retention for safety monitoring by default (Claude Platform release notes; Claude Fable page).

Sam Altman, OpenAI

Altman's 2025 essay "The Gentle Singularity" warned of "whole classes of jobs going away" in a much richer world. It also predicted that "2026 will likely see the arrival of systems that can figure out novel insights" (The Gentle Singularity). According to Wikipedia, his 2026 positions were these (Wikipedia: Sam Altman):

  • In April he said he had cooled on universal basic income.
  • In September he called AI adoption "non-negotiable".
  • He backed Amodei's call to slow down.

In February he estimated more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India. That month OpenAI signed a deal with TCS's HyperVault for 100 MW of data-centre capacity, which could scale to 1 GW (TechCrunch, 18 Feb 2026).

In May OpenAI launched DeployCo, a company that sells deployment and integration services. It is backed by more than $4 billion from a TPG-led group (Wikipedia: OpenAI, citing Axios). With DeployCo, buyers can get OpenAI integration work from OpenAI itself as well as from independent services firms.

Demis Hassabis and Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google DeepMind

In August Hassabis became Alphabet's chief scientist and chair of Google DeepMind, handing day-to-day operations to Kavukcuoglu (Business Insider). Kavukcuoglu was already Google's first Chief AI Architect, a role created to get models into products faster (CNBC via NBC San Diego). Gemini is now run day to day by an engineer focused on shipping, so expect more roadmap news to come from him. Jeff Dean is leaving to start his own initiative, Discovery Loop, with Sanjay Ghemawat. The research found no Hassabis timeline statement from 2025 or 2026. See Gemini.

Elon Musk, SpaceX, SpaceXAI and Cursor

xAI became part of SpaceX in an all-stock merger that closed on 2 February 2026; SpaceX's filings give no dollar value for it (SpaceX prospectus). In May Musk said it would cease to exist as a separate company, and in July it was renamed SpaceXAI (Wikipedia: SpaceXAI). SpaceX's securities filing shows the AI segment had $3.2 billion of revenue and a $6.4 billion operating loss in 2025, and 117 million monthly users of Grok's AI features on 31 March 2026 (SpaceX S-1/A). SpaceX's purchase of Cursor, at an implied equity value of $60.0 billion, took effect on 14 August (SpaceX Form 8-K). For buyers, the risk is concentration. One owner now controls a frontier model, a social network and a code editor reported at about $3 billion ARR in May 2026 (Wikipedia citing Bloomberg; no primary revenue figure found). See Grok.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia

In 2026 Nvidia acted as a financier of the whole AI stack, not just a chip supplier:

  • It said in July it would invest $5 billion in SSI (Wikipedia).
  • It backed Yann LeCun's AMI Labs (Sifted).
  • It invests in n8n through its venture arm, NVentures (n8n press page).
  • It invested in ElevenLabs (ElevenLabs blog).
  • It licensed Groq's technology in a deal reportedly worth about $20 billion (Wikipedia: Groq).
  • It gave a $105 billion financial backstop for an 8 GW data centre in Ohio that OpenAI leases (Wikipedia: OpenAI).
  • It signed a definitive agreement on 2 Sep 2026 to buy Hugging Face for about $11.9 billion plus a retention pool of up to about $1.0 billion (closing expected in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals), after talks reported in August (Nvidia Form 8-K; Business Insider).

Huang sits on PCAST and received the 2026 IEEE Medal of Honor (Wikipedia: Jensen Huang). The BBC says he has largely dismissed calls for tighter AI rules, arguing that rogue agents are a solvable engineering problem (BBC's paraphrase). In May 2026 he said "AI creates jobs" and called AI the US's "best opportunity to re-industrialize" (TechCrunch, 4 May 2026; secondary). His best-known forecast, that AI would pass "any test" within five years, dates from March 2024 (as quoted by Wikipedia: AGI). See Hardware.

Lisa Su and Fei-Fei Li, AMD

AMD is to supply up to 6 GW of Instinct GPUs to OpenAI, which has an option to buy up to 10% of AMD (Wikipedia: OpenAI). Su was reappointed to PCAST in 2026 (Wikipedia: Lisa Su). On 28 September AMD agreed to buy World Labs for $8.2 billion. Its founder, Fei-Fei Li, becomes AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist when the deal closes (TechCrunch). World Labs' first product, Marble, is pitched for entertainment and robot-training simulation. Li won the 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering (Wikipedia: Fei-Fei Li). A chip company hiring her shows that world models (AI that simulates how the physical world behaves) have become a hardware bet for physical automation.

Yann LeCun, AMI Labs

LeCun left Meta in November 2025 (Wikipedia: 2025 in AI) and is now executive chairman of AMI Labs, with Alexandre LeBrun as CEO (TechCrunch). In March 2026 AMI raised $1.03 billion from investors including Nvidia, Samsung, Temasek and Toyota Ventures. The Paris-based company is building JEPA world models for industrial control, automation, robotics and healthcare (Sifted). LeCun told the FT in 2025 that "LLMs basically are a dead end when it comes to superintelligence" (as quoted by Wikipedia: Yann LeCun). On whether LLM agents will reach the factory floor, he is the sceptic to follow.

Jack Clark, Anthropic and Import AI

Clark co-founded Anthropic, is its Head of Public Benefit and leads The Anthropic Institute, its think tank on AI's societal effects (Anthropic leadership page). His Import AI newsletter tracks how fast AI is automating research. On 5 October he wrote that 2026 had been a year of "warning shots" about automated AI research and development, and that the same is now true of "increasingly automated science" (Import AI). METR, an independent testing group, offers a preliminary estimate of "~1.5X overall acceleration in capabilities due to AI" inside Anthropic. METR also judged Opus 5.5 "unlikely to be able to fully automate AI R&D" (METR).

Marc Benioff, Salesforce

Salesforce's own releases give the best-documented revenue series for agents. Agentforce ARR rose from $800 million in February 2026 to $1.2 billion in May. On 26 August it "exceeded $1.5 billion", on a wider definition that now includes Slackbot and Headless 360 (Salesforce Q2 FY27 release). Salesforce also bought Fin, which charges per outcome, and announced "Claudeforce" with Anthropic (Salesforce and Anthropic). Wikipedia quotes Benioff saying he "need[ed] less heads" when he cut support staff from about 9,000 to about 5,000 in September 2025 (Wikipedia: Marc Benioff). He is the clearest example of a chief executive selling agents as a replacement for staff. See Costs.

Bill McDermott, ServiceNow

At ServiceNow's Knowledge 2026 conference, McDermott cited a reported case of an AI agent deleting a production database in nine seconds. He used it to argue for an agent "kill switch" (Fortune). ServiceNow added Anthropic and OpenAI models in January 2026 and completed its purchase of Moveworks in December 2025 (Wikipedia: ServiceNow). His governance line is now what enterprise buyers expect to hear: show the controls, the audit trail and the off switch.

Michael Truell, Cursor

Truell's December 2025 warning that vibe coding builds "shaky foundations" came with a definition of vibe coding as closing your eyes and not looking at the code (Fortune). Cursor reached about $3 billion ARR by May 2026 (Wikipedia: Cursor, citing Bloomberg; no primary revenue figure found), three months before SpaceX's purchase took effect. A Reuters headline, seen only as a headline, said OpenAI would cut off its models for the SpaceX-owned Cursor. Cursor is now the test case for how fights between model providers reach the people who use their tools. The research did not confirm Truell's title after the deal closed (Business Insider).

Bret Taylor, Sierra and OpenAI

Taylor co-founded Sierra with Clay Bavor and chairs OpenAI's board. In April 2026, when Sierra was valued at $10 billion, it bought Fragment to build up its agent work in France (TechCrunch). In early May 2026 CNBC reported a $950 million round at a $15.8 billion post-money valuation (via Qz; not read directly). Its last ARR figure, more than $150 million, dates from November 2025 (Sierra blog). Sierra-style customer-service agents compete directly with the contact-centre work that many Indian outsourcing firms provide. For a business that outsources its support, that makes Taylor more relevant than most model-lab chiefs.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Government of India

At Davos in January 2026, Vaishnaw predicted that India will become the largest supplier of services at the AI application layer (Business Today). At the February summit he called for AI "for, by, and of the humans", and acknowledged disruption in IT services alongside reskilling (Business Today). He also called AI a "fifth industrial revolution" (News On AIR). His figure of $200 billion is a forecast of investment, not committed money (Fortune). The government's fact-check unit flagged a viral remark attributed to him as fake (News On AIR). Check any Vaishnaw quote before you use it. See India.

Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan, Sarvam AI

In March 2026 Sarvam open-sourced Sarvam 30B and 105B under Apache-2.0 (blog dated 6 Mar 2026; Hugging Face repos created 3 Mar 2026), both trained in India on IndiaAI compute (vendor), and launched an assistant called Indus (Business Today). In June it raised a $234 million Series B at a $1.5 billion valuation, with HCLTech as lead strategic investor (Wikipedia: Sarvam AI). On 9 February Vaishnaw said the sovereign-model strategy was delivering results (Let's Data Science). Gnani.ai and BharatGen also unveiled sovereign models at the summit (Free Press Journal). For automation in Indian languages, Sarvam is the first name buyers are likely to raise.

Henna Virkkunen, European Commission

Virkkunen fronted the AI Omnibus (proposed 19 November 2025; Regulation (EU) 2026/1744), which delays the AI Act's stricter rules (Mobile World Live). It entered into force on 27 July 2026 and sets these dates (EU Commission; AI Act Service Desk):

  • High-risk obligations under Annex III apply from 2 December 2027.
  • Obligations under Annex I apply from 2 August 2028.
  • The transparency rules in Article 50 have applied since 2 August 2026.
  • New prohibitions added by the Omnibus (AI systems that generate non-consensual sexual deepfakes or child sexual abuse material) apply from 2 December 2026.

The separate Digital Omnibus on GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act is still at European Parliament committee stage and has not been adopted (secondary).

TIME put her on its 2026 list of the 100 most influential people (Wikipedia: Henna Virkkunen). For any business with EU customers or users, these dates set the compliance calendar.

David Sacks and Michael Kratsios, United States

Sacks's AI-czar role ended in March 2026, when his 130-day stint as a special government employee ran out (TechCrunch). He told Bloomberg that PCAST would push the President's national AI framework to replace "a patchwork" of state rules (TechCrunch). TechCrunch counts 15 initial members, including Jensen Huang, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison and Lisa Su; the Daily Signal said 13. Wikipedia says more members were announced on 23 March 2026 and the council now has 24 members plus the co-chairs (Wikipedia-only). The initial count stays unresolved. Kratsios directs the White House science office, OSTP (Wikipedia: Michael Kratsios). Sriram Krishnan left on 30 June, so Kratsios is now the most stable named US official. Businesses operating in the US should expect federal pressure for light, national rules while states keep acting on their own.

Josephine Teo, Singapore

At Davos on 22 January 2026, Teo announced the Model AI Governance Framework for Agentic AI from Singapore's IMDA. It is voluntary. But organisations remain legally accountable for what their agents do, whether they built them or bought them (Bird & Bird). It is the most concrete government text on agents found in this research. A business can use it as a ready-made checklist when writing agent governance into contracts with vendors and partners. See Asia-Pacific.

What this means for your business

Treat leadership change as vendor risk. In ten months, leadership changed at Google DeepMind, OpenAI's operating team, xAI and the IndiaAI Mission. The US AI czar left, and two prominent researchers moved or are moving. Base vendor decisions on products, contracts and published roadmaps, not on named executives. Re-check any quoted statement before you rely on it.

Model access now depends on safety leaders and governments as well as on price. Four developments point the same way:

  • Amodei's call to slow capability gains ("pace the frontier").
  • OpenAI's decision to withhold GPT-6.1 Astra.
  • The US export-control directive that forced Anthropic to disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all customers from 12 June until access returned on 1 July (Anthropic; Al Jazeera).
  • The Pentagon's supply-chain designation of Anthropic.

Ask for automations that can switch models, and put model-substitution clauses in your contracts with vendors and implementation partners. See Playbook and Governance.

Platform CEOs and regulators have already written the governance requirements. McDermott's "kill switch" and Singapore's voluntary framework, under which organisations remain accountable for agents they buy, both set the expectation. So does Benioff's open framing of agents as headcount reduction. Decide before deployment who in your business answers for an agent's actions. Require audit logs, approval steps and a stop control as part of the product, not as extras. Per-outcome prices, such as Fin's $0.99 per outcome (Fin pricing), are a pricing model you will now meet in the market. See Costs.

Expect your tools to change owners. Six recent deals show the pattern:

  • Cursor went to SpaceX.
  • Fin went to Salesforce.
  • SAP took a stake in n8n.
  • Workday agreed to buy Pipedream (Workday).
  • World Labs is going to AMD.
  • Nvidia signed a definitive agreement to buy Hugging Face (2 Sep 2026; closing expected in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approvals) (Nvidia Form 8-K).

Masad's remark that independence is "kind of hard" sums up the trend. Prefer open protocols such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which Anthropic gave to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025 (Anthropic). Keep your workflow logic portable, and ask each vendor what happens to your data and workflows if it changes hands. See Frameworks and Tool stack.

The labs are moving into services and training, so you can buy deployment help from them as well as from integrators. Several 2026 moves show it (Anthropic newsroom):

  • OpenAI's DeployCo sells deployment and integration work.
  • TCS became the first organisation outside the US to join OpenAI's certification programme (TechCrunch).
  • Anthropic committed $100 million to train 10,000 engineers.
  • Anthropic partnered with Accenture on embedded evaluation.

When you choose a partner, treat lab certifications and partner programmes as one signal, not as proof of delivery.

In India, policy favours AI at the application layer, but the officials in charge are changing. Vaishnaw expects India to lead in AI application-layer services. UIDAI CEO Saurabh Vijay holds additional charge of the IndiaAI Mission (secondary, June 2026); confirm contacts before relying on its compute subsidies. Anthropic's February 2026 India brief showed India with 5.8% of global Claude.ai consumer use, second only to the US, yet 101st of 116 countries per person, with software tasks making up 45.2% of use (Anthropic India brief). Its June 2026 Economic Index release (April–May 2026 data; Claude.ai Free, Pro and Max) puts India at 7.12% of usage in May and a usage-per-capita index of 0.30, where 1.0 is proportional to working-age population (Anthropic Economic Index data). For most Indian businesses outside IT, especially SMEs, adoption is still at an early stage. See India.

Prepare your staff. Your employees may have read the warnings from Amodei, Altman and Mensch, Srinivas's "glorious future" remark and Benioff's support cuts. Answer with evidence. In November 2025, 52% of consumer Claude.ai conversations were augmentation (AI helping a person do the work) and 45% were automation (AI doing the work itself). For first-party API traffic, Anthropic says "automated use remains dominant" and gives no percentage (Anthropic Economic Index, Jan 2026). Tell staff which kind each project is. See Future outlook.

Conflicts and weak sourcing to watch

  • xAI's founders and value. Wikipedia says xAI was founded by Musk and 11 others; about half had left by February 2026, and by late March Musk was the only one remaining (Wikipedia citing Reuters; the late-March point is Wikipedia-only, matching the aggregators). SpaceX's filings give no value: the all-stock merger closed on 2 Feb 2026 at 0.1433 SpaceX shares per xAI share (SpaceX prospectus). Wikipedia gives $250B (another Wikipedia article $125B), and a combined $1.25T is press- or Wikipedia-only.
